Bulletin Board Message
The Excellent Adventures “Bulletin Board” has been temporarily shut down. Since the “Bulletin Board” was an open forum, which did not allow us to control who or when someone would post a message; in recent months we have received a tremendous amount of unwanted and uncontrollable “SPAM”.
Although you will not be able to post a message, we would be happy to hear from you and will post your messages and comments to this page; just send us an email and we will attach it here. email address. algofish@softcom.net
Please check back, we will be posting fishing information and conditions periodically.
Before the Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton, we will be posting a message regarding the conditions and outlook for Kelsey Bass Ranch.
Thanks for your understanding,

Archive Bulletin Board/Fishing Report - 2007
Feb. 16th, 2008 – This was my first trip to Kelsey Bass Ranch of the year. The weather was excellent with a day time high temperature about 65 degrees and an on and off again breeze to 5 mph. The lake surface temperature was 50 to 54 degrees considerably colder than last year for the same time period. The lake is full, thanks to all of the rain that we have had lately. We did manage to find some cooperative bass in 5 to 8 foot of water using sinking lines and black and purple bunny leeches.
The most effective way to fish Kelsey right now is from a floating craft. If you are equipped with a depth finder even better; look for areas in the lake where the bottom tapers from 4 to 7 or 8 feet and around the submerged islands. Expect marginal success if you are a walking and wading angler right now.
Due to the cold water temperature we are probably a couple weeks behind last years pre-spawn, if we have some extended warm weather, look for conditions to change rapidly.

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008 - Well, I'm not sure how smart it was of me, but I decided to fish Kelsey on Saturday(23), instead of postponing it till this weekend. It was a bit windy when I got there at 7:00 am. The wind picked up and blew me off the lake before 9:30. I tried wade fishing a bit, but as you said in your report, it's much better to be out on the water to hit the spots fish are holding. Plus, by the time I tried wade fishing, the wind was howling and made casting tough. I did catch fish! I found some fish in an area the bottom slopes to around 10'. Fish were holding at the top of the slope, or at the mid point. I didn't find any fish in the shallow flat areas. The fish were fairly aggressive for the colder, 49 degree water temps I saw. Fish were in pretty good shape, but like late last summer, I noticed the bigger fish were a bit thin? I caught a few that had 8lb heads, but had 5lb bodies. Brian Sasaki
February 28, 2008 – We are looking for your pictures! Our Kelsey page is certainly outdated and we could use your help! If you fish Kelsey Bass Ranch this year and you do take a note worthy picture, send it to Excellent Adventures. We would love to post it on our web site.
March 8, 2008 - I was on the water at sunrise. Tried a popper for 15
minutes or so, without any interest from the fish. I went subsurface, and
changed locations a couple times, before I hooked into my first fish of the day.
Fishing was slow, but steady. I found a few fish in 10' of water, but most fish
came in 2-4' of water. Some were on the edges of the lake, or weed lines. Some
were out in the shallow flats. I never did fish the middle or inner part of the
lake. I stopped fishing around 4:00. Total numbers of fish was around 15-18.
Nothing bigger than 2-3 lbs. Water temps were in the high 50s. Breezy, to gusty
winds most of the day. brians
March 21, 2008 – The wind was blowing 10 to 14 miles per hour all day long. So I decided to just walk the shoreline and see if I could raise a few bass on top. Did manage to find a few cooperative bass 2 to 4 lbs along the north shoreline.
March 22, 2008 - We had a good day. Randy is a newcomer to bass fishing, and Kelsey, but he learns quick! I don't even want to say how many fish we landed, but it was a LOT. All but a few fish were caught sub surface. I caught a few on top, just before dark. There were a number of people on the water. I think 5-6 boats came and went, with some bank fishermen too. Busy day out there, so we did not cover a whole lot of water....but we really didn't need to. As you probably saw, big algae bloom. brians
March 28, 2008 - Things were slow early when I started on
the east side at about 7:30AM. I don’t think I picked up my first fish until
probably 9 or 9:30AM. Although there were tons of damsel fly shucks on the
water, there were no adults that I could see and nothing was happening on damsel
nymph imitations. The most effective pattern was a small brown/tan crawfish
pattern. I probably picked up six fish before noon. Bill King and a couple of
his buddies from the Diablo Club arrived at about maybe 10AM but in comparing
notes they also found it slow in the AM. Water temp was about 63 a few inches
below the surface at about noon. I really wanted top water action so switched
to a popper about noon and picked up a few half-hearted and poorly aimed strikes
(they can snatch a dragonfly 2 feet about the surface but can’t seem to
correctly locate my popper) but no hook-ups. The wind also picked up about this
time. After lunch the weather was pretty nice (despite the wind) and I mostly
walked around trying the popper here and there but without much success but did
pickup a decent fish down at the southeastern inlet cove that maybe you
suggested last year for early season activity. I had to get back early so left
about 3 PM. Dwight Hendrix
March 29, 2008 - I wanted to take a moment to say a big "Thank
You" from the club. We fished Kelsey and did very well. The fishing
was slow in the morning but we figured it out by lunch and I believe that at
last count, we landed a total of 118 fish. That's not bad for 11 of us.
Everyone caught fish! I'll be back in touch to reserve a date for next
year. EC Powell Fly Fishers
