2001 Shad Recap

For us shad junkies, we were hoping for a good flow on the Yuba River, it just didn't happen this year.

Typically the shad run on the American doesn’t get into full swing until mid-June. But I found big schools in the mid section of the river early in June.  Because of this, we were able to average between 40 and 80 fish per day.

Starting out with two old friends that have gone with me on many trips was George and Willie. We encountered good numbers of shad in the usually runs. But as the week progressed, I found fishing from a drift boat a real plus. In fact all of the water that we fished was from the drift boat. There were very few shore anglers and no other boats in the upper section.

My most memorable experience comes from a young beginning fly angler, Paul Landsberg.

He was a very mature, at 13 years of age, eager to learned, listening to my instructions, he caught lots of shad and at times out fished his father (Perry).
