Your trip starts after a short
flight from Lax to Loreto BCS. After arriving, clearing customs, our air conditioned
van will transport you to Mulege. Along the way, we will stop for refreshment and take a
short break to stretch our legs. Upon arriving in Mulege, you will see why we picked
this location over many others. You will have time to unpack and just relax
with a cold cerveza before dinner.
Now,
it's time to get all of that gear ready for the next six days of fishing.
The next six days you will be fishing for; dorado, sailfish, along with skipjack, bonito, sierra, trigger fish, yellowtail and any other species that decide to take a fly. Novices can expect that, in addition to their Mexican guide, that Al will accompany them for at least one day. The fishing has proven outstanding in past years with the largest dorado topped 45 pounds and sail to 120 pounds. To make the week of fishing more interesting, you will have the opportunity to participate in a 4 day tournament. The small entry fee will be awarded to the top three with the biggest dorado and the winning captain. Of course, this tournament is all in good fun and highlighted by fabulous banquet dinner.
This is the difference between
other trips and Excellent Adventures trips, when the fishing day ends, your activities do
not. Each night before or after dinner you will have the opportunity to visit one of
the sites in town. Like the Mission Santa Rosalia de Mulege, the Old Federal Prison,
or take a cab ride to Santa Rosalia, a historic town north of Mulege.
For the Awards Tournament Dinner, our host hotel will prepare a banquet from our catch that day for a fiesta that you won't believe. In addition, the prizes are passed out to the winning anglers and to the skipper whose boat brought in the winning dorado.
Your last day of fishing and with the pressure of the tournament behind, the day can be dedicated just for sails or what ever you want.
Finally, the last morning you will pack up and head back to the Loreto airport mid morning.
In 1994 and again in 1995 my former partner (Jerry Neuburger) and I traveled and fished extensively in Baja, looking for a quiet, non-touristy area to bring fly fishermen, an area that they could enjoy not only the fishing but the people and country. That's when WE DISCOVERED Mulege. Right then and there we decided that this was IT. After working with the local guides, teaching them the difference between conventional fishing methods and fly fishing, we were ready to bring down fly anglers.
That first year (1996) with guests, was truly an ADVENTURE to say the least, but we all survived, caught lots of dorado, a few sails, and brought back many memories that they could share with their family and fishing friends.
Mulege, a palm lined oasis community about 90 miles north of Loreto, is nested in a lushly vegetated river valley surrounded by barren hills. The town, which has a population of about 1300, sits on the north bank of the Rio Santa Rosalia (locally know as the Rio Mulege) about two miles upstream from the Sea of Cortez. Mulege Bay, fifteen miles wide, bordered on the north by Punta Chivato and on the south by Concepcion Bay.
One of the oldest towns in southern Baja California, it began as a mission settlement in 1705. With its air of tranquility, abundance of date palms and many old-style houses. Mulege exudes the atmosphere of a quiet, traditional town. Mission Santa Rosalia de Mulege, third of the Catholic missions in Baja California, was established in 1705 and completed in 1766. At the mouth of Rio Mulege, stone steps lead to the lighthouse on the summit of "El Sombrerito" - a hat shaped monolith which allows a panoramic view. The Old Federal Territorial Prison, which much of the time had no prisoners, overlooks Mulege from a bluff to the north. Today, it has been converted into a museum.
With the completion of the paved Transpeninsular Highway, Mulege has become a popular tourist destination for many winter travelers. The pueblo has still maintained it's small town atmosphere, and it's friendly people provide a welcome and secure feeling.
