Easy Tie Twisted 3 Stage Leader

Material - any type of hard finish monofilament or fluorocarbon will work.

To make a leader with the overall length of;

6’ to 7’, 21 to 22 feet of material will be needed,

8’ to 9’, 26 to 27 feet of material will be needed.

Start with 21 to 22 feet of 15 lbs. mono and divide by putting the ends together and then pulling one leg of the material so that it is about 18 to 20 inches longer that the other.   This single end will be your tippet section.  Crimp the new center (which is now 18 to 20 inches off center) with your thumb and finger.  Put right hand between the two strands and hold crimped end with left finger and thumb and turn crimp towards your body between your right thumb and finger until strands start to roll together.  As the twisted leader starts to form and lengthen keep stands tight and keep pulling through right thumb and finger while twisting.  Keep the ends of the two strands from tangling by holding the apex of the twist with the left finger and thumb and separating the strands with the right hand.  Hold arms above head if it helps keeping the two ends apart.  It the strands start to get loose carefully separate to tighten the twist and continue twisting with the left finger and thumb.  When the short strand runs out, hold ends to keep from unraveling.  Finish by twisting and making a small half hitch with the shorter strand.

Carefully run your finger and thumb over the twisted leader from the knotted section to the loop to stretch out the lines to make them as even as possible.  Slight adjustments can be made when finishing the leader.  Now divide the twisted leader into 2 sections by doubling over the loop end making sure that you have about 2/3 butt and 1/3 middle while leaving about 1/3 of the tip as a single strand.  Start crimping and twisting again and you will notice that the double twisted lines come together to form a smooth butt section.  As you continue to twist the lines together you might notice that the twisted section may start to separate a little, just keep going on until you reach the end of the loop section.  This separation can be adjusted when you tie a nail knot to finish the leader.  Hold the middle section at the end of the loop with your left finger and thumb and using a small tube, tie a 4 turn nail knot.  Pull both ends tight slowly then lubricate and pull again to seat the knot.  If the double strand middle section is a little uneven you can now adjust it by stretching it out to the half hitch.  Tie another 4 turn nail knot.  You should now have a 6 to 7 foot leader with a #60 butt section, #30 middle section and #15 tippet.
